Tony Robbins – His 5 Most Important Lessons

It’s no secret Tony Robbins is one of the greatest motivational speaker of all-time. He has personally coached millions of people and inspired even more. So today, Ignitia takes a closer look at five of the most important lessons Tony has taught over the past thirty years.

Life Supports What Supports Life

One of the most important phrases Tony constantly returns to is the idea that ‘Life supports what supports life.’ According to Tony, ‘I believe that life supports what supports more life. In other words, motivation does matter. If you’re just trying to take care of yourself, you’re part of life and I believe life steps in and gives you a certain level of insight.’ However, this principle can be extrapolated to a larger sense as well. According to Tony, if you’re looking to support only yourself, because you are part of life, you will see certain gains. However if you, or your business, aim to support humanity at large, the benefits coming from these efforts will be ever greater. For evidence of this, look no further than the rise in success of such philanthropically-minded companies as Warby Parker, Lemonade, or Grameen America.

Beliefs Create Meaning

Another lesson Tony has constantly espoused is, ‘Change your story, change your life’. Tony has long preached that the stories we tell ourselves are perhaps the most powerful factor regarding our quality of life. According to Tony, ‘The only thing that’s keeping you from getting what you want is the story you keep telling yourself.’ And what we tell ourselves is then what we believe. Thus, what we believe, determines not only our happiness, but also our potential for success in life. ‘Beliefs have the power to create and the power to destroy. Human beings have the awesome ability to take any experience of their lives and create a meaning that disempowers them or one that can literally save their lives.’ Thus, the most important decision we can make is to determine what our highest values are.

Your Decisions Determine Your Destiny

According to Tony, no single factors shapes our lives to a greater degree than the decisions we make. As stated above, perhaps the most important decision we will ever make is what our highest values will be. Once we determine what our highest values are, the worth of every decision we make will be measured as to whether or not the decision moves us closer to, or further away from, our values. According to Tony, ultimately what we seek most is to move toward pleasure and away from pain. Thus, when we make decisions aligned with our highest values, we will ultimately experience pleasure even if in the short-term that decision brings us pain. For example, exercising to reach our higher value goal of good health.

Action is the Key to Success

According to Tony, the first step toward getting what you really want is to simply decide what it is you really want. After you’re crystal clear on what this is, then you’re able to take the next steps needed to bring about this outcome. Once you’re clear on your focus, as Tony puts it, ‘Where focus goes, energy flows’. According to Tony, ‘Only massive action can produce massive results’. In order to maintain this massive energy, Tony lays out his Massive Action Plan (MAP) here. According to Tony, most people live in their heads. ‘It’s an illusion that knowledge is power. Knowledge is potential power. Knowledge is trumped every single day by action.’

Progress is the Key to Happiness

When asked in an interview for the key to happiness, Tony Robbins gave a single word: progress. According to Tony, there’s always another level, and it is through growth that happiness is found. Whether it’s Richard Branson or Oprah Winfrey, Tony says the most successful people, ‘Have an insatiable hunger — to become, learn, do, share, and give more.’ It is this insatiable growth that leads to happiness and fulfillment. When you are making progress toward the thing you want most, to your goals, you can rest assured that you are on the right path.
